Originally it was founded in 1963. It was moved to the South Bank in 1976. Sir Denys Lasdun designed the present The National Theatre building. It houses three auditoriums, rehearsal rooms, set-building and scenic-painting workshops, costume- and prop-making and digital design. There are also spacious foyers and terraces overlooking the river, and a wide choice of eating places and bars.
